Grafitti: To draw on; to deface; unauthorized writing or drawing on a public surface.
Art: Skill aquired by experience, study, or observation. Decorative or illustrative elements in printed manner.
By definition, graffiti is a negative, destructive form of expression. To some it is considered art, but to most it is an annoying eyesore. Someone feeling the need to write or draw their name, nickname, or some random picture on some random object with no regard for ownership or asthetics? Does that sound like the attitude of a true artist?

It baffles me that there are people that feel the need to act like animals. That is, marking something for the sake of marking it. Like a dog urinating where another dog was, or a cat spraying that disgusting scent to claim a territory.
In the op-ed article "Graffiti Taggers Are Just a Pain in the Arts" by Michael Pernar, he discusses many of the issues regarding graffiti. Pernar believes that art and graffiti are not one in the same. Art has color, composition, style, purpose...where graffiti is, as Pernar puts it, "unsightly...damaging...costs the community millions of dollars a year." |
The purpose of art can be to enhance beauty, to inspire, show culture, stimulate the mind and senses, etc. regardless of whether you appreciate the art or not. Being able to express ones self is a freedom we all do or should have. The ability to write or draw our feelings, emotions, ideas, and such, is critical to be able to express ourselves. However, it should not come at the cost of another or an entire community.
Pernar says said it best when he wrote "there is a need for young people to express themselves through public art...this must be in controlled environments" and not "defacing private or public property...a criminal act...blatent vandalism...vile...meaningless."
